Had 109 cars for the car show, we suspect the project car auction increased participation, prior years have run about 85 to 90. We had a great crowd, no rain (but kinda warm), and lots of participation for the auction at 2:00, here's a pic of the auction in process:

Then here's a picture of Janet Keller, Easter Seals rep, the winning bidder Jerry Purcell, and Vince Anderson from SIR Brit.

Jerry won the bidding at a price of $6100. We are all pleased with this result - the winning bid was spot on for what we thought the market value was for the car plus Easter Seals will be getting over $5000 donation to provide rehabilitation services for people in our community. Thanks to everyone who worked hard to make this whole endeavor a success!Vincehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04249031145777456551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5722154213717410440.post-39036340206153328532016-09-21T10:02:00.000-07:002016-09-21T10:02:15.070-07:00Auction Details and RequirementsOdds are very high that whoever is serious about bidding on this car will look over this blog. We sincerely hope the information contained here has been helpful as you gain an understanding of the great work done on this car.

The auction is at 2:00pm on Saturday September 24th at the Newburgh IN Old Dam Site. This coincides with the annual British Car Show that same day and location.

The winning bidder will be required to put down 10% of the winning bid amount to hold the car. This can be by check but cash is preferred. The balance is due within 7 days. This must be either cash, cashiers check, or a personal check that clears prior to taking possession of the car. The monies go directly to SIR Brit, our treasurer is Bonnie Siebert. Bonnie will then write a check from SIR Brit to Easter Seals. Once SIR Brit has their funds, then the new owner will get the car, the title, and a painting of the car by club member Al Salhoff which has been signed by all of us that worked on the car.

So happy bidding, and thanks for your support of Easter Seals!Vincehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04249031145777456551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5722154213717410440.post-71105470109695093262016-08-25T11:23:00.001-07:002016-08-25T11:24:04.201-07:00Glamour ShotsAl and Dave M took some great shots of the car to help promote the auction. Carpeting is done in trunk. Our to do list is basically done, we are ready to start driving this thing!
Thursday Dave M will take the car home and start driving it on a regular basis. We also will start displaying the car in high traffic locations with signs about the auction. Here's a picture of the car with one of our signs:
The seats and seat belts are now installed. The hood now latches correctly. We have license plates and insurance, so Dave drove the car and filled up the tank. He says it ran well.

We did notice the front wheels are kind of "bow legged", ie they stick out at the bottom more than the top. The cause is worn bushings on the lower A arms, another common issue with MGB's. Fortunately it's an easy fix and we have the parts. Next Tuesday this should be tackled.
Carpet installation continues, many pieces require you to glue a part of the piece and let that set before doing the rest of the piece to get a great fit, so it moves kind of slow.
Worked on hood latch, found poor alignment of latch mechanism, we'll spend more time on this next week.

Installed new tires from Best One, thanks again guys! Sprayed undercoating on inner fenders. Installed donated top from Vince's '68 MGB onto a folding frame. This is starting to look like a nice car!
The Newburgh and Burkhart Road stores are splitting the costs. We really appreciate their willingness to support our efforts, and therefore Easter Seals! The refurbished wheels are now at the Newburgh store awaiting the tires, hopefully we'll have them ready to install as soon as next Tuesday!

Today we had four people (Vince, Dave M, Ray, and Clay) working. Vince got the rest of the lighting working, even including backup lights and hazard warning lights. Dave M continued the carpeting installation. Clay completed the assembly of the driver's seat, installed windshield wipers, and cleaned up some electrical connections. Ray cleaned up and painted the convertible top frame and hood prop rod.

Vince has decided to donate the convertible top from his '68 MGB. It's in great shape, about 7 years old and rarely been installed. He prefers a top with the zip out rear window, which he'll get later. In another week or so we'll make sure this top fits well on the project car.
Dave continued installation of the carpeting. Al used his painting skills to paint the steering wheel hub and some areas around dashboard switches black. Vince fixed all wiring on the rear of the car - turn signals, running lights, and brake lights. And we all worked together installing the hood.
All four bolts are correctly positioned and threaded to mount the posts to the body, and the lower rubber strip is firmly in place. We figured we had about 15 man hours so far in this basic task. Took every trick we knew to make it happen (tie down straps, large C clamp, duct tape, wire to pull out and extend rubber flap, etc). Here's the pics:

There were some defects in the paint on the hood, so Dave Folk is retaining the hood to wet sand and paint a second time. He will deliver it to the shop in a week or so.
Here's a picture, the doors and trunk lid line up quite well.
We are going to let the paint "cure" for a week, then put doors/hood/boot lid back on. Don't you love this color?
We did lose one day due to temps being too low to spray. Here's a picture of Dave spraying primer on the trunk lid and hood:
Next week should be above 60 degrees every day, so we ought to be able to get a lot of finish color applied.Vincehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04249031145777456551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5722154213717410440.post-56444815678548429562016-04-01T15:53:00.001-07:002016-04-01T15:53:12.134-07:00Back to Body WorkThe new radiator was installed March 29. The car is now ready to return to Dave Folk's for continued bodywork and then paint, now that warmer weather is here. Here's a picture of the car on it's way back to Dave's:

Based on Dave and Al's prior experience doing bodywork and paint, basically we need to have one person there at a time to assist Dave. We have worked out a schedule starting April 4th for two weeks where each weekday one club member will go to Dave's in Tennyson at 10:00am and assist him until they get tired or to a good stopping point. The paint has also been purchased. Great progress!Vincehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04249031145777456551noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5722154213717410440.post-18381353757219649422016-03-04T08:37:00.000-08:002016-03-09T12:45:21.604-08:00Not only runs, but drives! We have had a few more work sessions focused on mechanicals. One key result was that we were able to drive the car for about three blocks, ran pretty darn well. Here's a video of this first run:

After this run we changed the oil. We also noticed the radiator upper tank was leaking. Radiator shop was not able to fix, so we are getting a new radiator. We've replaced all cooling system hoses and applied undercoating to bottom of new floor pans. Car is ready for radiator installation and then return to Dave's for completion of bodywork.

Picture of engine compartment less radiator:

We've also replaced the "gaitors" for the rack and pinion, typical issue on these cars. Refilled with 90W oil and checked toe in.

We have made the decision as a club to auction the car and have selected the non-profit to benefit with the proceeds. Target is completed car by 8/1/16, auction then the day of our local British Car Show 9/24/16. So plan has been made, now just need to work the plan!
Installed new battery (with cutoff switch) plus new fuel pump. Struggled with still no fuel, eventually figured out we had a leak in the line between the fuel filter and the pump. Repaired that and we had fuel!

So then started the car. Initially had issues with poor running, found the mixture very lean on the rear carb. Fixed that and it ran pretty darn well! Good oil pressure, smooth idle, no extraneous noises. Then pushed down clutch and got it in gear - it did appear initially the clutch disc was stuck to the flywheel (often happens when these cars sit for long time), but then it freed up and the clutch worked fine!

Watch this video, pretty exciting:

Minor things to work on yet, like changing oil, installing air filters, choke cable, top off transmission fluid, etc. But right now we are excited that this is going to be a sweet little ride for someone!

Dave leads body work, and it's too cold in the winter to do paint, so we will concentrate on mechanical work over the winter.

Had our first workday at Ray's on December 29th. Great turnout, had six guys in total (Vince, Ray, Clay and Al plus two guys from SIR Brit south, Eric and Jeff). First step was to rebuild brakes. We removed one front caliper to confirm that both pistons moved freely - they do. The pads and rotors looked great, so we are just going to replace the flexible hoses on the front. Rear brakes were rebuilt with new shoes, wheel cylinders, and flexible hose. Vince worked with Eric and Jeff on the brakes. Ray, Clay, and Al took care of the clutch hydraulics, replacing the slave cylinder and flexible line.

Turns out we had three rear brake flexible lines, missing the two for the front so we are ordering those parts. Could not get the clutch to bleed and operate. Decided to replace the master cylinder, Clay had one to donate. On December 31 Clay, Vince and Ray installed the clutch master and bled the clutch hydraulics, we think that part's ready to go now. We also got the engine to fire on ether (starting fluid).

Here's two pictures from the December 29th work day:
If you look closely at the new passenger side fender it's got the two holes for the side reflector used prior to sidelights. We need to fill in these two holes and add the holes for the front sidelight (goes in front of the wheel). If we don't do this then we'll end up with only three corners of the car lighted up at night!
