Car's Moved to Boonville

On December 2 we moved the project car from Dave Folk's place to Ray Graham's place in Boonville.  Dave leads body work, and it's too cold in the winter to do paint, so we will concentrate on mechanical work over the winter.

Had our first workday at Ray's on December 29th.  Great turnout, had six guys in total (Vince, Ray, Clay and Al plus two guys from SIR Brit south, Eric and Jeff).  First step was to rebuild brakes.  We removed one front caliper to confirm that both pistons moved freely - they do.  The pads and rotors looked great, so we are just going to replace the flexible hoses on the front.  Rear brakes were rebuilt with new shoes, wheel cylinders, and flexible hose.  Vince worked with Eric and Jeff on the brakes.  Ray, Clay, and Al took care of the clutch hydraulics, replacing the slave cylinder and flexible line.

Turns out we had three rear brake flexible lines, missing the two for the front so we are ordering those parts.  Could not get the clutch to bleed and operate.  Decided to replace the master cylinder, Clay had one to donate.  On December 31 Clay, Vince and Ray installed the clutch master and bled the clutch hydraulics, we think that part's ready to go now.  We also got the engine to fire on ether (starting fluid).

Here's two pictures from the December 29th work day:

October 13th Update

Had Ray Graham, Dave Mullen, Dave Folk, and Vince Anderson working on the car today, here's some pictures:

If you look closely at the new passenger side fender it's got the two holes for the side reflector used prior to sidelights.  We need to fill in these two holes and add the holes for the front sidelight (goes in front of the wheel).  If we don't do this then we'll end up with only three corners of the car lighted up at night!

October 6th workday

Dave Folk, Dave Mullen, Al Salhoff and Ray Graham...prepared and Dave Folk applied primer to rear of car.  Decided that it will soon be too cold in Dave's garage to continue painting so once car is primed...move to Ray's to do the mechanicals this winter, the back to Dave Folk's in Spring for final painting.

Busy summer but back at it

Been over a month since an update, and been about that long since work was done.  Body work continues, the doors are now in primer.

The passenger side fender has the "dog leg" welded in place and Dave is starting the filler over the welds:

The hood is in final stages of body filler for the numerous dents to be addressed:

Today was just Dave and Vince working.  Vince decided to start evaluating the engine.  The compression looks reasonable - 130/90/120/130 then we put more motor oil plus some WD40 in cylinder #2 and it increased from 90 to 110.  These are close enough to warrant starting the engine later.  We also checked the oil pressure while spinning on the starter motor (no plugs) - measured 60 psi using mechanical gauge directly on oil port.  We did not register a reading on the electrical gauge on the dash, so this will need some further investigation later.  But the good news is the motor appears to not need any major work.

August 4th workday

Report by Al Salhoff - Dave sprayed the first coat of primer on the doors. It was a learning experience for Dave, dealing with a primer he had not previously used . I think they turned out OK. We learned a lot.

Body Prep Continues

Dave Folk says we are getting too far ahead of him as we prepare body sections for filler and paint.  Good problem to have!

Usual participants on 5/26 - Ray, Clay, Dave M, Dave F, Al, and Vince.  We temporarily installed the passenger side fender so Dave F can weld the lower replacement panel into correct position.  And did more prep work.  Coming along well.

Vince installing those nasty bolts on the backside of the fender under the dash

Dave F continuing to do bodywork while Al and Dave M have some kind of serious discussion in the background

Dave F again doing bodywork.  He's got a nice selection of neat tools for bodywork, Clay particularly enjoyed playing with his plasma cutter to prepare the passenger side fender adder panel.

May 12 and 16 Pictures

Body work is progressing and Dave Folk welded a bar on the backside of the" crack of doom" and then welded the crack. This should be a great fix for a common problem.

Wednesday, April 29, 2015

First work day was held on Tuesday April 28th at Dave Folk's house by Tennyson IN.  Made some great progress, fixed locking rear passenger brake so we can roll the car around, removed windshield plus several body panels (both doors, trunk lid, hood, and passenger side fender).  Starting removal of some of the old floor panels.  Picture below is starting work on the replacement passenger side fender, it's much better than the one of the car but still needs a "dog leg" panel installed on it's lower extremity right behind the wheel.

That's Dave Folk in the foreground sporting his new look, shaved off his beard and hair in honor of bagging a nice wild turkey the week before.

Next steps are kinda grunt work - lots of sanding to prepare for paint.

SIR Brit Project Car

SIR Brit car club decided to tackle restoring a car and selling it to benefit a non-profit.  A committee of four members (Dave Folk, Ray Graham, Al Sarhoff, and Vince Anderson) started looking at cars and did a deep dive into two viable cars, a 1970 MGB and a 1966 Triumph Spitfire.  We decided on the MGB, here's some pictures of it from the evaluation:

On April 13th the club officially approved the project, and the car now resides at Dave Folk's house.  Dave will be leading the initial phase on body prep and paint.

Club members will be working on Tuesday mornings starting 4/28 and then one Saturday a month, first one being May 16th.

Stay tuned for further updates, our goal is to have a nice car ready to either auction or raffle off within about a year!
